Emu Egg Incubation Humidity Guide

The right humidity, how to measure it, and how to adjust.

Emu eggs do best at about 30 to 40 percent relative humidity for most of incubation. The goal is to let the egg lose the right amount of moisture so the air cell grows on schedule. Too much humidity and the chick can be too wet to hatch. Too little and it can dry out.

Measuring and Adjusting

Use a hygrometer to track humidity, and like your thermometer, verify it against a known reference. To raise humidity, add a water surface or a damp sponge inside the incubator. To lower it, reduce the water surface or improve ventilation. Make small changes and watch the air cell over several days rather than chasing the number minute to minute.

Wet Bulb vs Dry Bulb

Some hatchers track a wet bulb reading, which combines temperature and humidity into one figure. A dry bulb thermometer reads air temperature, while a wet bulb reads lower based on evaporation. Both methods work. Use whichever your incubator and notes are set up for, and stay consistent.

Humidity at Lockdown

For the final 3 days, raise humidity to help the chick hatch without the membrane drying and sticking. Many hatchers move toward 60 percent or higher during lockdown.
